Central park dairy
naturalcultured

One cannot picture how big is Central Park until you are there (it’s 51 blocks long!!!). It’s a huge paradise among a skyscraper jungle. It’s so big and you have more to visit than you can imagine even when you’re standing there.
That’s why I always recommend the Dairy (information center) be your fist visit. There you can not only enjoy the beauty of the building but you can also get a very detailed free map of the park so that you can plan your visit and not miss any spot.

Staten island ferry

Don´t waste your precious time booking a half-day excursion to Liberty Island. Instead, take the Staten Island Ferry ( yes, the same one that Melanie Griffith took everyday to conmmute in "Working Girls"). It is free and the views are absolutely breathtaking. Total duration: 2 hours aprox. Train: South Ferry.

The ferry departs from Battery Park. Here you can see the views chicalista is talking about. I'd take her tip ;)

Liberty statue, lower manhattan and the ferry itself. it seems to be crowded but don't worry, there's plenty of seats.

At the southernmost end of Battery Park, there's Battery Gardens, an outdoor bar. Have a drink and enjoy the great views of the harbor before or after your trip on the ferry.

Top of the rock vs. empire state
cultured
saved by 26 users - Popularity

Everyone knows that the Empire State Building is a must visit in NYC but what most people don’t know is that The Top Of The Rock is much better. T.O.T.R. is a little less high but it gives you a view that you can’t get from the Empire State. It gives you a fantastic view of Manhattan, including Central Park and the Empire State Building.
Both cost 18$ and have great views but if you just want to do one, I strongly recommend you to choose Top of the Rock. See my pictures to judge for yourself.

Metrocard (use it!)
cultured

Thinking you can go everywhere by walking in NYC is a common error among freshman tourists. You’ll hear yourself saying things like: “It’s only 10 blocks!”. Well, ten blocks is a lot… especially when you probably have 20 more blocks on your back.

Buy a metro-card. They are cheap and convenient. You have a lot of different kinds of cards: day pass, three day pass, 7-Day pass… and you don’t need to buy more than one: they’re rechargeable. At first you’d think you’re not going to take the

Places to stay

Manhattan inn hostel
saved by 13 users - Popularity

I've tried some places in NYC to stay and this is the best one. If you are looking for a cheap, well located and clean hostel, this is the one.

Its location is excelent and, though we had some booking problems, the nice staff solved them quickly.

The best addon is the roof terrace. Yo can enjoy (free) breakfast there, with a beautiful view of the city.. or just hang out and meet new people.
