Shashemene is so much more than the small group of Rastafari-followers and their famiies. The town is truly plural - in languages, religions, music and identities. When I first knew it in the 1960'ies it was an overgrown market town, gathering small and large scale traders from all of central southern Ethiopia. Now it has more than 100,000 inhabitants, many Orthodox churches, mosques and protestant chapels, many schools and colleges etc. It is southern Ethiopia in a nutshell!
