When walking around Shashamane, be very cautious with the youths. Apart from the Fuck You syndrome, also, interesting, is to hear Ethiopian youths yell “rass claat”, “fire burn” and “boom bye” while pretending to shoot you down with a gun. WHY? the result of a long standing mix of Jamaican Trenchtown ghetto culture with Shashemene misery and unemployment. Ignore them, answer a spontaneous “Rastafari!” and walk along.

The youths Susanna talks about mostly hang around the section of town, Melka Oda, where the rastafarians are found, In other parts of town, people are not that sophisticated when it comes to foreigners. Some are eager to practice their English and children will always flock around, calling "you, you, you". In my youth they shouted "ferenji!" Do not give candy or money to children; few people want their children to beg. Avoid eye contact with men, if you are a woman, but treat everybody with respect and you will be OK. In the Ethiopian context, Shashemene is a prosperous town.
