There are a few options for getting to Machu Picchu. For adventurist folks, there's the Inca trail, although if you want to do this you need to book well in advance. Like, months. You can also take the train from Cusco. You can stay overnight in Aguas Calientes, or you can just come down in the morning. Staying overnight means you're out there earlier, when there are fewer people... and that's so much nicer (in my opinion).
Travel tips
Don't rush it when you go to Machu Picchu! I'd recommend you to stay at Aguas Calientes for at least 2 days. Because, the "Old Peak" is a good place for taking photos and enjoy the mystery by looking down at Machu Picchu from the Huayna Picchu.
More to see than most would think. It's not a place you can visit in only 1-2 hours. One needs time to enjoy, explore, learn!.
