Don't miss out on delicious "raspaos"! They are like snow cones in local flavors topped with condensed milk. Good for Cartagena's hot climate!
Travel tips
If you are planning on visiting or doing walks around the city, I recommend you go the earlier the better to avoid the sun during the midday which is very strong. Also, take plenty of water, comfortable shoes and a sun block lotion!
Cartagena is very safe, but it is advisable to just take enough money for what you plan to do during the day. Don't take valuable objects on you if you are going to the beach.
The old part is also known as "Ciudad amurallada" because of the walls surrounding the whole city. Cars are not allowed in its streets so to go around it you must walk or take a car pulled by horses! Beautiful balconies, narrow alleys with its squares and churches in colonial style. I recomend you go for a walk through the old part at night previous to dinner. You'll easily fall in love there (I did!) if you're not already in love.
11 km of walls! Very romantic, at day or night. Safe. You can find one of the "windows" which once served as viewing points to defend from invaders but now you can just sit down and relax and enjoy the view to the sea, on your own or with your couple.
