If you're not yet a spanishspeaker and you plan travel around America for a long time, is an excellent idea to start your trip in Antigua. Join a Spanish school (there are many of them) in this quiet city of lively, enjoy their food, their choices of the natural surroundings and their holidays and weekends to learn a new language that will open many doors and facilitate your communication with local people.
The patron saint festivities are held in Antigua on July 25, the day of Santiago, with dances and music. But the most important holiday parades and religious processions of Eastern time, when some city streets are thousands of flowers carpet of color to the passage of processions.
Touristy, yes, but so cultural and beautiful. It's here where those vibrant textiles seem to come to life, on the streets, in the music and in the food. Delicious tortillas. Amazing outdoor markets. When we were there, the cherry blossoms were in full bloom. We stayed at a beautiful historic hotel, captured sunsets with the locals and danced the night away.
