The basement
If you're in Nashville, but Top 40 country's not your thing, check out this tiny venue on 8th Street. The place typically books a diverse array of bands form alt-country, Americana and indie rock. All of which is mostly geared to a younger crowd. And despite it's subterranean location, it's not a total dump. You can kill some time before a show at the popular area record store upstairs, Grimey's.
Tootsie's orchid lounge
This is the one Nashville bar you at least have to say you stopped by. The legendary honky-tonk has been around for decades and was a launching point for many of today's country stars. The raucous crowds here have been known to get a little out of hand (in a good way, for the most part) and a celebrity musician or two have been known to show up for surprise performances. Ladies might want to make sure they use the bathroom somewhere else, though, as the ones at Tootsie's are notoriously nasty.
