Zilker botanical garden
in Highlights
The folks in Austin take their natural parks seriously and this is one of the better botanical gardens I've seen in the US. They've got a rose garden, an oriental garden, herbs and fragrant plants, cactuses. The Butterfly trail is filled with plants that attract those flying beasties.
If you're planning a visit check the website, which has a map and offers monthly photos of flowering plants and their identification so you'll know what to look for.
Open dawn to dusk.

Curra's texmex
in Eating & Drinking
Avocado margaritas are Curra's claim to fame, but the food in general is really great. Typical texmex fare - with the added Austin advantage of having lots of vegetarian options like soy tacos.

Hoover's cooking

Soul food! Make that soul food with a southwest twist. Great place, great food. You'll get full just looking at the menu. Sandwiches, jerk chicken, pork chops, fried okra, fried chicken, catfish, black eyed peas. Real deal. Super tasty.
