Tainan night markets
Tainan is really famous for its good food and its night markets; the biggest in the country. Unlike Taipei's, Tainan Night Markets are not displayed everyday. Each one has a different schedule, opening just two or three days a week. The most popular are Wusheng night market (武聖夜市), Yonghua night market (永華夜市), Lovers' night market (情人夜市), Flower garden night market (花園夜市) and Da Dong night market (大東夜市).
Slack season tan tsi noodles - 度小月擔仔麵
This restaurant located just at the left side of Chihkan Towers is one of the several in Tainan that claim to be the real heirs of the legendary fisherman Hong, who became a famous noodles seller in the late nineteenth century. I really don't know if they are the real ones, but what I know is that they serve amazing food. Not only noodles, but also the best lu rou fan (pork rice) I've ever eaten in Taiwan.
Chikan peddler's noodles - 赤崁擔仔麵
Amazing restaurant in the center of Tainan to taste real Taiwanese food. It's decorated in 50's style and, although it use to be crowded, has plenty of space in its two floors. I really recomend the "ma you ji mian shian" (thin noodles in jinger soup); delicious!
If you've got the Tainan City Tour Passport you can have a bowl of noodles for free!!
Tan zuo ma li shao rouhe shi - 碳佐麻里燒肉和食
This restaurant with an endless name is located in the way to Anping District, a little bit far from the center of the city, but deserves the trip. It has a fantastic design and better service. It's specialized in Japanese style grilled meat (yakiniku). The prices are fair and the menus really abundant.
If you have a Tainan City Tour Passport, you've got a free menu ticket!
Rock'n'roll pub
Well, there's no mistery here. The name and tag line say it all: "Rock'n'Roll Will Never Die". Classic rock and hard rock music, American rock aesthetic, everyday customers and darts. I'm not into hard rock music, but I had a lot of fun there as the place reminds me a pub I use to go in my home town (Lado Oscuro, Salamanca, Spain).
Wire
One of that places difficult to be found by chance, as it's totally hidden in a small and old street with which mimics being decorated as an old Taiwanese house and following the same style of the same owners pub called Kinks. Fantastic and quiet atmosphere to have a coffee or a beer. Great music, books, movies, photo and illustration exhibitions... A must go.
Hive
Really cool lounge bar to have a drink relaxed and enjoying electronic music. Classic lounge decoration with a lot of sofas and soft lights. The prices are fair enough, and even cheap in the case of beer. As many of the good bars and pubs in the city is hide into a small road; difficult to find if you don't know where it really is.
