It is claimed that one of this was the first monument built to the Virgin Mary, who miraculously appeared before one of the pilars in the year 40AD (she was still alive) to St. James - or as the Spanish call him "Matamoros" something like killer of moors, when Zaragoza was the roman town of Caesaraugusta. During the Spanish Civil War the city of Zaragoza was bombed, and the cathedral was a target. Three bombs fell on the cathedral without exploding. Two of them are on display in the basilica.
