Dhow trips
One of the most beautiful trips in northern Mozambican. Navigation dhows old sail to the neighboring island of Goa, with unspoilt coral beach, the mangrove of Cabeceiras small and beautiful beaches of Cabeceiras Grande, Carrusca and Chocas. Fortim de sâo sebastiâo
In the far northeast of the island. Building started in 1545 as a defense for maritime traffic of Portuguese in the spice route and the market for slaves, gold and ivory. It was attacked by pirates and Dutch, Arabs, Turks and French. Inside is the chapel of Nossa Senhora do Baluarte, of 1522, the oldest Catholic building in Mozambique. The sailors prayed there to thank divine protection during the long sea voyage. Outside is the Dugong Dive Center, to drink a soft drink and relieve heat.
Mossuril by 4x4
Hire a pick-up from several friends and go to Mossuril. Get a huge, quiet beach with some Portuguese colonial construction. To 9 kms from here you wil arrive to Chocas de Mar, a small bay of fishermen with lonely beaches to unwind. There is a bar-restaurant. And land is also up endless beaches Carrusca, something more tourists. Restaurant and bungalows on an incredible beach.
Sâo paulo palace
This former Jesuit college, built in 1610, was burned by the Arabs in 1670 and rebuilt four years later. Inside are three museums: Museum of Religious Art, Museum of the Marine and Museum of Decorative Arts. Admission is about three euros. Outside you will meet with the local youngs trying to sell you any kind of coral necklaces. A good time to talk, teach English and learn Portuguese. Near there is the local of TDM for international calls and cheap but slow internet.
Cidade de macuti
World Heritage Site and the first capital of Mozambique. Macuti constitutes, in one half of the island, the colonial stone city of the Portugueses, old and abandoned but with charm. In the other half lives the local people, of ethnic Makua, in their elementary houses and bustling streets full of African life.
Churches and chapels, a mosque and a Hindu temple talks about the mix of cultures. The island is small and easy to walk it around.
