Lenoir Preserve

recommendation by daisy

Not many people know about this place, which is a shame because it’s pretty neat. The Lenoir Preserve is located on the Hudson River and houses one of my favorite butterfly gardens. During the summer is the time to go here. There’s a dragon fly pond that looks like it’s straight out of the movie Fern Gully. I’ve taken older members of my family here and they really liked it.

First off, let’s just say that Yonkers has some pretty unfair stereotypes about it. So you can imagine my surprise when I saw Chef Peter Kelly’s newest endeavor, X20. The building is nearly all-glass and located on a rehabbed pier overlooking the water. My first impression was that it reminded me of the state of the art Mac building in downtown Manhattan! I ordered their staple Yonkers chowder for an appetizer and the Jumbo Maine Scallops for an entrée. Both were delicious.

Little Red Lighthouse

recommendation by daisy

This is the only remaining lighthouse in the New York City area. Came here once during Open House New York and it was a fun experience, especially for city kids. I grew up on the Cape so lighthouses give me warm and fuzzy feelings about warm. I think my own kids caught that feeling too when they were here. The lighthouse itself is pretty small and actually inspired the children’s book The Little Red Lighthouse and the Great Gray Bridge.
