The Labrang Monastery is one of the 6 great monasteries of the Gelukpa (Yellow Hat) sect. The monastery was founded in 1709 by the first Jamyang Zhaypa. and had relative peace until the 1920s when the Muslims and Tibetans had numerous battles around the region and again during the cultural revolution.
Labrang was also a gathering point for numerous annual religious festivals, supported an active regional marketplace.

Around the monastry of Labrang ist this 3 km pilgrim walk, called in all budhist traditions as Khora. You can walk with the Tibetans along it and turn hundreds of praying wheels.
The setting is great, but much better than that was getting in touch with the local people. It is nice to relax walking and enjoy the special ambience that they create with their faith.

Hiking is another option in the area. Just follow one of the canyons up around the town and you'll feel alone really fast. Just remember to bring enough water with you and a stick to throw at feral dogs. People and herders do live up in the canyons so you might get invited into some ones home for a glass of yak butter tea and tsampa.
