This Shinto shrine was chosen by Emperor Meiji to commemorate the soldiers of the Boshin War and also as one of the centers to restore the Shinto religion in Japan. Today is dedicated to all the soldiers who died defending Japan. In the last decades became a polemic symbol as it was taken by the ultranationalist as a personal feudo. The official visits of the former Prime Minister Koizumi turned it into the center of important diplomatic issues with China and Korea.
