The North Gate was the most important of the five gates included in the fort built in 1882 by the Ching Dinasty, three years after the division of Dansui and Hsintien administrations and the fundation of a new prefecture in Taipei.
The gate is still standing, keeping its original appearance and surviving alongside the elevated highways, just in front of the old postal office.
