Dihua Street

The Mengjia refugees started to built their shophouses in front of the Dadaocheng Wharf after their 1853 exodus from China. This way Dihua Street, located in the old Taipei area, turned into the most important market for traditional foods, herbs, Chinese medicines and dry food in the city. Many of the shops are still held by the original families.
During 1880's and 1890's neo-baroque facades were added to many shophouses giving to the street a Western style that mixes with the Chinese goods.
