North Gate

The North Gate was the most important of the five gates included in the fort built in 1882 by the Ching Dinasty, three years after the division of Dansui and Hsintien administrations and the fundation of a new prefecture in Taipei.

The gate is still standing, keeping its original appearance and surviving alongside the elevated highways, just in front of the old postal office.

Old Postal Office

The old Post Office building is located just in front of the North Gate. It was built by the Japanese in 1929 when they moved the office near the train station, and it's still in use nowadays. It is a good example of the architectural experiments the Japanese used to do in the colonies, mixing the neoclassical design and its columns with Corinthian capitals and Egyptian palms, with the simplicity of the modern buildings.

Built in 1921 and opened in the period of Japanese rule, the school had a student body that was predominantly Japanese with only a handful of Taiwanese students. In the post-war era, it was used to house the city government and became an important landmark for local citizens. Combining historical architecture and contemporary art, MOCA Taipei has provided a prime reference point for local citizens exchanging experiences.
