The first spot you are gonna find on your walk to the Tainan Station if you arrive to the city by bus is the beautiful Tainan Park. It's the largest urban park in the country and an important recreational space of the city, as it includes an amphitheater, a library, and a music hall.
Things to do
This temple has a tragic and bloody history. It was originally built by the Ching Dinasty in 1668 and dedicated to Matsu, housing the 3 god's statues from Fuchien brought by Koxinga. In 1895, during the colonization wars the Japanese killed many Ching's soldiers in the temple and buried them inside. Until its rebuilding date, in 1966, the temple and its ghosts were feared by the locals.
Today it's a turistic spot as is located just in front of the Anping Fort and sorrounded by a market.
The Great East Gate is one of the few remaining gates of the city wall built by the Ching Dinasty in 1725 that was demolished by the Japanese in order to build new roads. The gatehouses were added in 1736. Nowadays there are two East Gates: the one renovated in 1975 and the remains of the old Small East Gate.
Built in 1664, it was the residence of an official until 1713, when it was changed into the earliest ancestral shrine in the Tainan area. It's famous for its paintings by the artist Chen Yu-fong.
