This mission was dedicated in 1786 and was built to evangelize the local indigenous people in the area, the Chumash. The mission and chapel have been improved upon over the years, most notably after a big earthquake in the 19th century. The grounds are more extensive than some of the other missions in southern California.

Admission for a self-guided tour is $5, and for a guided $8.

Know as the Queen of the Missions. Father Junipero Serra never saw this one to completion. It is the only mission that stayed continuously in the hands of the Franciscans. This has a great cemetary. Some of the early notables in Spanish CA history are buried here.
At one time they could see to the ocean.
Check out the story of St Barbara.
