The first thing I did after getting off the BART in San Fran was lie on the grounds of this historic landmark and take a nap amongst the suited folks leaving the government buildings and the wandering street people. This magnificent building, which spans 500,000 sq. ft. and is the fifth largest dome in the world, also housed one of the most tragic moments in recent San Fran history; the assassination of county supervisor and gay rights activist Harvey Milk and former mayor George Moscone.

Built in 1933 by Lillie Hitchcock Coit as a memorial to volunteer firemen, Coit Tower is a round stone tower situated atop of Telegraph Hill, North Beach. From here you can have panoramic views of all the city, from Golden Gate to Embarcadero and a privileged view of downtown with the Transamerica Building on first line.

Inside the tower, while you wait for your turn to get in the elevator, you'll find big and beautiful colorful murals depicting day to day life in California.
