There are no many Roman ruins left in this city that was known as Salmantica (Helmantica) within the Roman Empire. The most important and a symbol of the city is the Roman bridge built in the I century as a part of the "Vía de la Plata" (Route of the Silver) connecting the Roman cities of Emerita Augusta (Mérida) and Cesar Augusta (Zaragoza).
In its exit is located the "Verraco", a Celtiberian decapitated boar totem which appears in the classic book "El lazarillo de Tormes" (published in 1554).
