Things to do
Howard’s Charro Café has been churning out authentic Mexican dishes for over 40 years. With an atmosphere both casual and festively ethnic, this restaurant promises to be an excellent choice for any dining occasions. Homemade taco shells and tortilla chips turn the everyday a la carte item into an entrée. Large portions of the basics; tacos, enchiladas, and tamales, keep you wanting more but spending a lot less. On the weekends, enjoy the live mariachi band while cramming down the empanadas.
This is the perfect place to experience a movie. Comfy stadium seating, great sound, freshly baked goods and a simple snack bar help you enjoy the visual entertainment. Every day offers new entertainment. You can enjoy indie fare, documentaries and cinema classics in a comfortable environment similar to a mall's cinemaplex, including the free parking. Get on the mailing list and you'll get weekly updates of what's coming months in advance. Ticket prices usually run no more than $7.
Omaha's major art museum may not hold much a candle to the bigger area art museums as far as size goes. It's pretty small, but it packs a punch for it's size (and it's a in a downright cool art deco building downtown). I love the American and European exhibits, and they usually attract interesting traveling exhibits as well. Definitely a good way to spend a couple hours while in town. And it's super easy to get to.
The lake at DeSoto Bend used to be part of the Missouri River, but once the Mighty Mo changed course, it turned this bend into a lake that's now a wildlife refuge. There's lots of great fishing, animal watching and hiking. My personal favorite is the Bertrand museum, which tells the story of the turn of the century sunken steamboat ship that was discovered underground on the site of the refuge in the 1960s. The museum has thousands of artifacts from the old boat.
