Things to do

BEEN THERE! WANNA GO THERE!

My girlfriend had a wedding here and it was simply beautiful. It wasn't her first choice but once she visited here and saw everything she scrapped everything for a wedding here. For non-wedding attendees, you should take an opportunity to climb the observation tower that’s over the water. It provides great sights of the entire garden. Kids love the World Of Wonders exhibit in the children’s garden. They’ve got splashy water toys there that are pretty fun.

Virginia Zoo

recommendation by isaac

I still can’t get over admission being only $7. I was surprised several times during my visit here; the zoo really went beyond my expectations. It’s beautifully designed and laid out in a way that’s accessible to persons with disabilities (my aunt is in a wheelchair). It’s definitely a manageable size and the crowds aren’t obscene like that one zoo in D.C. The elephant house was definitely my favorite exhibit. They’ve got a petting zoo with farm animals that you can actually feed, too.

Chrysler Museum of Art

Wow, this museum is huge. We got here an hour after it opened and actually stayed till close. This free museum had over 30,000 pieces in a variety of mediums. You’ll find sculptures, gorgeous Impressionist paintings, photography, contemporary art, jewelry, and Egyptian artifacts, some 5,000 years-old. Perhaps I’m biased, but the Impressionist gallery is the one that really knocked my socks off. You’ll find pieces by Monet, Rodin, and Cezanne here.

The Norva

recommendation by isaac

The Norva is super cool. I think even Rolling Stone magazine said it was one of the best venues in the country. What’s cool is that big acts (like Timbaland) perform here as well as small acts (like Of Montreal). I like to grab a spot right next to the balcony on the second-floor when I go to shows here. It’s in my opinion the best spot for sights and audio. The staff here is really quite good too. They stopped the annoying crowd surfers that kept kicking my head.

It wouldn’t be a trip to the naval capital of the United States without a visit to Nauticus. They’ve got a great museum that focuses on sea and naval life. Their biggest attraction, the Battleship Wisconsin, is a huge WWII battleship that’s free to board. Basically you can wander about it on your own our take an audio tour. On the animal side they’ve got a lot of hands-on exhibits. You can touch hermit crabs, star fish, horseshoe crabs, and other creatures that are found in the Chesapeake Bay.
