Contrary to its name, the world’s largest folk festival actually kicks off in the middle of September and lasts until the first Sunday in October. In 2010 an additional day is added to the festival because it is a special celebratory year. Munich’s mayor opened the Oktoberfest for its 200th anniversary on 18 September in the traditional manner, by tapping the first keg using a wooden hammer and then shouting “O’zapft is!”, as in “it is tapped”.
This is perhaps one of the most disturbing places I have ever been, simply because of the eerie stillness of the surrounding woods. Dachau was the longest running concentration camp, it opened the day before Hilter got into power, and closed days before he died, and it is a haunting but unmissable experience. Do not go expecting a laugh and a good time, but instead prepare yourself for something you will never forget.
Pretty disappointing. Stay for a little bit for a taste of the hype, but don't feel bad about leaving before it's over.
