Stift Melk was a castle built in late 11C belonging to an Austrian margrave, until he donated to Benedictine monks. Since then, it was used as school, library, production site for manuscripts.
The abbey is spectacular, decorated with gold, masterpieces of paintings and sculptures all around. Instead of getting impressed, I started thinking why the faith has to be shown by the excessive luxury decoration.. The view of the humble town you see from windows and the terrace is nice.
