Olympique de Marseille, (or OM for short), is the local football team. OM is big, no, it’s HUGE, in Marseille – a true legacy. OM shirts, souvenirs, and other gear can be seen almost everywhere.
Stade Velodrome where OM plays, originally built for events such as the Tour de France and World Track Cycling Championships (vélo=bike), was the first stadium to be built using concrete and is the second largest stadium in France. In 1984, the cycling track was removed and it evolved into the OM home.

Honestly, I’m not one for organized sports, yet I am unable to completely escape OM. When there is a game, you can hear the city exploding when a goal has been made or when the other team scores. Bars & cafes will place large flat screen TVs outside, and customers will argue for the best seat to watch the game. The big rivalry is with the Paris Saint-Germain, or PSG. There is a special energy in the air out on the streets, in the cafes and bars when there is a game. Even if you are like me, and detest sports, you must watch at least one game, to experience local excitement. And if you are truly daring, then try to make it to a game at Stade Vélodrome. Seriously, it’s a cultural experience!
