Palais du Pharo was built as an imperial residence built for Emperor Louis-Napoleon III, although, apparently, he never actually used it. Today, the outstanding building is used as a Conference Center, while people can be seen picnicking, reading, or just hanging out in the surrounding Pharo Gardens, which overlook the sea and Vieux Port. Entrance to the gardens is free.
Things to do
With it’s turreted towers, the Abbey of Saint Victor looks like something out of the Middle Ages. It was founded in the 5th century by the monk, John Cassian, but has been modified, built upon, and rebuilt through the ages. According to literature, as it’s known in its present state, dates to the 11th century. A neat piece of history to experience!
Open daily, 8:30AM-6:30PM.
Gare de Sainte-Charles is THE central hub for any traveler stepping into Marseille. Found within are trains connecting to the rest of France and Europe, a metro stop, buses to and from surrounding areas, and a shuttle to the local airport.
Opened in 1848, but recently remodeled, it's more than just a weigh station; it's an architectural site to be savored while waiting for connections. Drenched in natural light, it retains much of the old building mixed with modern elements.
Either when arriving to or leaving Marseille, take a breath, rest and take in the site of this epic stairway. The 104 steps, along with the several sculptures incorporated with it, is a historical, cultural, architectural and artistic setting to take some time with. The sculptures echo with allegories; depictions of hunting, fishing, & harvesting; and references to the Marseille connection to African & Middle-Eastern French colonies of the past.
Bewitching is Palais et Parc Longchamp. Fountains, small ponds, waterfalls, sculptures, & the architecture with its colonnade transport one to another time or world. Enter from Blvd Longchamp, under the gaze of lions, climb the stairs to the main building with it’s colonnades & sculptures overlooking the fountain and then enter the archway in the back to enter a lush park. A perfect escape for those looking for quiet and calm. Also found within, Musée des Beaux-Arts & Musée d'Histoire Naturelle.
