Malaga’s Centre for Contemporary Art is one of the finest museums in Andalusia - and the best thing is entrance won’t cost you a penny (or rather, cent). Displayed in the large, open-plan exhibition hall, the collection consists of some 400 pieces of art. There are also temporary exhibitions throughout the year, showcasing some of the top names in modern art, both nationally and internationally. If you are there during the opening of an exhibition you are likely to meet the artist, too.
Things to do
Wander along the narrow, cobbled streets behind the main pedestrian street and you’ll find yourself in the heart of Malaga’s old town. This is one of the most charming places in the city: a cluster of Baroque facades and little squares that have a Moorish air. The area is dominated by the majestic 16th century cathedral, which is particularly dramatic at night when its ornate stonework facade is lit up. Take a seat on the terrace of one of the family-run restaurants and soak up the atmosphere.
If you do it right, you can visit one of the most extensive collections of artworks by Pablo Picasso (he was born in Malaga) without paying for it. On the last Sunday of every month admission is free. Its in the Buenavista Palace, an elegant 16th century building, it displays over 200 works of art, from paintings, drawings and sculptures to ceramics and etchings (look out for the classics, such as Mother and Child). The museum also hosts temporary exhibitions, as well as workshops and concerts.
Malaga has one beach, La Malagueta, using sand from the Sahara and man made in the 1800´s. If you drive or rent a car or take a bus to the isolated coves around Torrox and Nerja, about 45 mins away. Peaceful and startingly beautiful. There is dolphins around so you may get the chance to swim with them...
Malaga’s Parque is around 100 years old, if you lijke to walk in the past then its the place to do it, maybe licking something long and cold ! Great for the late afternoon walk and breezy. The botanical gardens are one of the few outdoor gardens in Europe, old massive palms and many tropical & exotic plants from all over the planet. Loads of winding twisitng paths lead through the park, loads of benches to sit and just be, or just be a nosey brat people watching lol
