Cementerio de La Florida

cultured

This relatively unknown little cemetery is locked up year round and has loads of feral cats wandering around, but it's the common grave that holds the remains of the people of Madrid who were killed during the uprising against the French troops in May of 1808 as commemorated in Goya's famous paintings 2 de mayo and 3 de mayo.
The cemetery opens once a year on May 2nd, but even when it's closed you can get a decent feel for the place.
