It was built as a palace in the 7th century by the king Songtsen Gampo and then rebuilded by the 5th Dalai Lama as you can seen it now. Potala is amazing from outside and inside but the new regulations obligate to do the visit in just one hour, otherwise they'll punish with a fine to your guide or to you. Is a shame but you'll visit it between two chinese tourist groups.
Anyway, enjoy one of the world atractions and the mirror of Tibet.

The Jokhang Temple was built on the former site of a lake. According to the legend, every time a temple was built, it would collapse. Confused by this phenomenon, the kings ask to Avalokitesvara (the merci god) for help. He told the them that in the geography of Tibet lie down a dragon with the lake at the heart. In order to build the temple, he advised they must destroy the dragon by filling and leveling the lake using 1,000 goats to carry soil from a mountain far away.

Rising up beside Potala Palace, the peak of Chakpori Hill is 3725 meters high. If you climb it you'll see an amazing view of the city. During the middle of 17th century, in the early Qing Dynasty, a temple was erected on the top of the mountain. Within this temple was placed a sapphire figure of a certain Tibetan Medicine King. It was an important school till the chines destroyed.
