Ryoanji Temple

recommendation by limalimon

The temple's main attraction is its rock garden, the most famous of its kind in Japan.

The simple Zen garden consist of nothing but rocks, moss and neatly raked gravel.

The meaning of the garden's arrangement is unknown and up to each visitor's interpretation.

You can really be there for hours just looking at the garden

Ginkaku-ji - 銀閣寺

recommendation by chema

Jishō-ji (慈照寺 - Temple of Shining Mercy) is a Zen temple designed by Shogun Ashikaga Yoshimasa (1490) emulating the Kinkaku-ji built by his grandfather years before. It's better known as Ginkaku-ji (銀閣寺 - Temple of the Silver Pavilion) because of the initial plans, never realized, to cover its walls in silver foil. The complex of gardens includes a famous sand garden located in front of the main building.

The so called Buddhist temple is the center of a whole complex of beautiful buildings constructed in 1633 and originally funded during the Heian period (s. VIII), including a three story pagoda, the shinto Jishu Shrine and the Otowa waterfall. The view from the veranda of the main building is really wonderfull.

The Rokuon-ji (鹿苑寺 - Deers GardenTemple) is better known as Kinkaku-ji (金閣寺 - Golden Pavilion Temple) because of its golden walls. It was built in 1397 by Shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu and converted into a Zen temple by his son later. It's sorrounded by beautiful gardens and stands beside a great lake. The complex includes also a traditional tea house and other small and curious spots.
