BEEN THERE! WANNA GO THERE!

Simply put, this place is one of the neatest little old towns in America. And a perfect destination for a romantic weekend. The historic town nestled just off the banks of the Mississippi River is loaded with cozy bed and breakfasts and cute restaurants and coffee houses. Walk down it's vintage streets and you'll swear it's 1909, not 2009.

Linmar Gardens

recommendation by troy

This 3.5 acre garden is nestled in a hillside overlooking this historic town and has a wide variety of perennial and annual beds. It's also loaded with walkways walkways, waterfalls, charming gazebos and lovely statues. There's even a 20-foot waterfall on the properties. There are lots of tranquil spots in Galena, but this was perhaps the most peaceful. They offer two different tours a day (11am and 2 pm).

Built in 1857 for a wealthy area steamboat man, this Italianate mansion is one of the most beautiful homes in a town that's full of them. It's still furnished with well-maintained Victorian pieces and the famous green drapes, which were the ones that Scarlett used to make her dress with in Gone With the Wind. Stop by for a tour of the 22-room private residence, or a walk through of the gardens.

Dowling House

recommendation by troy

This home was built in 1826 for John Dowling and formerly used as a trading post for miners. It's reportedly the oldest stone structure in the state of Illinois (and Galena). It's still loaded with old furniture and antiques and showcases a large collection of pottery. Try one of the 30 minute tours of the property; it was probably our favorite and most efficient tour we took while in Galena.
