Berkeley students, local business owners and hippies fought hard to make this space a public park in the late 60s. President Reagan criticized UC Berkeley for letting the students go too far and there was a show-down in 1969 where one protester was killed. It's now a mellow little park where homeless folks sleep and hang out and Food Not Bombs serves lunch daily.
Things to do
Patty Hearst was in this apartment when she was taken by the Symbionese Liberation Army. After the kidnapping she was held for ransom in exchange for SLA prisoners, and after that failed for free food distribution programs in the Bay Area. Months later the heiress took on the name Tania and became a full fledged member of the SLA, appearing in recordings and bank robberies.
