A 61 kilometres south Coihaique leads to a detour in the middle of the Pampa steppe that after 16 kms. more leaves you in the town of Balmaceda, the first of Aisen, founded in 1917 by the need to group the settlers from Argentina. You have accommodation, the largest regional airport and border crossing Huemules.
Following the Southern Road at Km 59 from Coihaique is reached Cerro Castillo National Reserve, with reforestation in the middle of the pampas. A later kiloemter is the ranger headquarters, with camping area and the Chiguay lagoon. They charge a small entry tear. Open in high season, December to March, from 8.30 to 21 hours, the rest of the year close at 18.30.
From NR Cerro Castillo five times crosses the river in a wooded ravine and arrive at a glacial valley with large masses of rock, among which highlights the Piedra del Conde (km. 76). At km 83 you will cross the Portezuelo Ibañez (1,120 mt.). At Km 85 begins the Cuesta del Diablo zigzag overlooking the river valley Ibanez, who comes from an ice road to the west and is born of the Hudson volcano (hence the color of ashes). To the right closes the valley Castillo Hill (2,675 m).
