Petroglyph National Monument

ADD TO MY TRIP

Out on the barren west side of Albuquerque, where the skyline is dotted with extinct volcanoes easy trails wind through the old lava flows where you can see pictographs carved into the black basalt. They believe the petroglyphs were carved in this hunting ground by pueblo indians just before the Spanish conquest and up until the 17th c. The trails are easy you have to keep an eye out for snakes, and unfortunately there's a lot of trash and defaced petroglyphs.
