Albi Cathedral was built by the Catholic church after the crusade to wipe out the Cathars, and it was designed to epitomise the power of the church. Its huge brick structure gives a clear impression of solidity and strength and its carved entrance porch provides a contrasting delicacy of design. Inside, the walls are painted stone, with each side chapel showing a different and often complex pattern.

Housed between the cathedral and the river is the museum dedicated to the works of Toulouse Lautrec, born in this town. For those only familiar with his posters depicting the Moulin Rouge, the museum gives a clear indication of the variety of Lautrec's work, ranging from depictions of horses to the various intimate portraits of women, often painted in Parisian brothels. Despite the setting there is no sense of voyeurism, but a brilliant presentation of ordinary women doing ordinary things.
