This is one of the Albany's finest gems. Washington Park has over 90 acres, which makes it a hot spot for local outdoorsy folk. It has tennis courts, running and walking paths, a playground, and an outdoor stage for performing arts. I’m a biker so I love coming up here and biking through the trails, taking back the sights. I’d definitely recommend it for picnicking in the summer time. But I admit I wouldn’t stay too late, when it gets dark weirdos tend to come out.
Things to do
Went here randomly on a raining day in Albany. I was pleasantly surprised by the collections and we ended up spending all afternoon here. Did I mention it's free? The building itself is quite beautiful and the reflection pool in front confirms it. Apparently the exhibits here don’t change often but it was all new to me. There’s a really moving exhibit focused on the events of 9/11 but it may be a little too provocative for children. They might have more fun in the taxidermy animal section.
Whenever we have visitors in town they always ask, “What is that strange building by the airport?” This would be “The Egg.” The Egg is a performance space that has music, theater, and dance concerts that is literally shaped like a huge egg. Our family comes here every year for The Nutcracker. It’s always top-notch theater and the stage and acoustics are of Broadway caliber. This isn’t a place where you just walk in and buy tickets, so make sure if you’re interested to buy them in advance.
