Aachen Cathedral

ADD TO MY TRIP

Aachen Cathedral is considered to be the finest building of its age in Europe. The chapel of the Emperor Charlemagne is an octagonal masterpiece which defines the typical designs of the Carolingian Romanesque period.
Begun in the late 8th century, it was based on San Vitale at Revenna. At first floor level a gallery surrounds the building, supported by magnificent marble and granite columns.
The walls and ceiling of the chapel are covered in mosaics in a variety of colours.
