When Araucans and Tehuelches peoples roamed the region, Tunquelén, meaning "restful place" was a massive rock where natives used to seek refuge. During the 1930s, the talented Ernesto Estrada designed and had built the Hotel Tunquelén, one of his great Andin-style masterpieces, enhancing the body of lakes in the south.
