If you are willing to brave the sketchy neighborhood of the “6th St corridor”, Tu Lan offers fantastic Vietnamese food for dirt cheap. A large menu, with appetizers, noodles & rice, seafood, vegetarian options, desserts and specials, something can be found for anyone. Delicious, hearty, and more than affordable, the food here is worth the trip to the sketchy ‘hood! Even Julia Child mentioned this restaurant on her show. (What she was doing at 6th & Market must have been an interesting story...)
Cafe Trieste stakes claim to being the first espresso joint on the West Coast, and boasts the celebrities who have visited here with their photos on the wall. Regardless of the namedropping and the longevity, Cafe Trieste in North Beach serves pretty damn good coffee. I liked to stop here before meeting up with friends, for a slice of their cheesecake – divine! A great spot to stop and have some coffee while trolling around North Beach.
Cocktail dive bar that was a favorite hang out spot for the beat writers in the 50s. You can still waste the daylight hours away there, the prices have risen a bit but not the decor.
Open from 2pm to 2am
Great bar with lots of micro brew beers on tap, a big round bar to sit around, a pool table and they also host punk and indie shows, there is a link to their calendar on the website.
On this tour you get a little bit of history and can witness the process of how this local brewery makes their beer. Afterwards they give you an hour long beer tasting session.
