In Puerto de Santa Maria, avoid all the touristy bars and restaurants on the river's edge and instead head into the historic center for a bite to eat. I walked up a bunch of small winding streets to finally uncover this gem in a small plaza. It's adjacent to a hotel (Casa de los Leones, which was lovely inside!). Their specialty are tapas made in a very "local" southern Spanish way. They are cheap and yummy! Try the lomo de dorada, and the salmorejo.
Eating & Drinking
Watched a gorgeous sunset on the beach at TK3 (pronounced teh-ka-tres) with a Mojito in my hand while cool music played in the background. They put torches out on the sand at night, and the atmosphere remains chilled out. Sit on the sand listening to the waves crash as the stars come out, and have another mojito while you're at it!!
I'd never eaten chicken and eggs as fresh these! The hens live behind the kitchen so they don't have far to travel! It's quite an experience to listen to Pepe's stories while you eat & watch the chickens walk about. The owner/chef also lives on the property, which his father owned & was once a very large restaurant. Try the stewed chicken, fried peppers, & "broken" eggs with fries and ham. All the veggies come from a nearby farm. Located betw. Bahia Mar shopping center & Blue Elephant car wash.
There are tons of places to eat by the beach in Valdelagrana, but the Orozco is the best by far for quality at a low price. Try some of their delicious local seafood specialties: Fried boquerones, cazon adobado, chocos, grilled shrimp. After stuffing yourself, be sure to sit outside and enjoy the evening breeze off the sea.
Probably the best pizza I've had in Spain! My favorite pie is the one with Speck, Nuts and Gorgonzola. Wash it down with a bottle of rose Lambrusco. Yummmmm!! Their pastas and desserts are also delicious. Though it is a very family-friendly restaurant, the decor is tasteful, and even romantic in the patio out back. Enjoy!!
